BURNOUT IN MEDICAL STUDENTS: RISK FACTORS, IMPACT ON QUALITY OF LIFE, AND PREVENTION STRATEGIES

Burnout Syndrome (BS) is a relevant health issue among medical students, with significant repercussions on quality of life and academic performance. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors, impacts, and prevention strategies related to burnout in this population. This integrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, SciELO, and LILACS databases, including articles published between 2015 and 2025 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The findings indicate a high prevalence of burnout, despite methodological variability among studies, and a consistent association with factors such as academic overload, sleep deprivation, chronic stress, and insufficient psychosocial support. Greater vulnerability was observed among female students, as well as a tendency for symptom progression throughout medical training. Burnout showed a negative impact on mental health and academic performance, and was associated with risk behaviors. It is concluded that burnout among medical students is a multifactorial condition, requiring integrated individual and institutional interventions, with emphasis on mental health promotion and restructuring of the academic environment.
